San Jose de Tumacacori Mission was established in 1691 on the site of a Pima Indian village and is the oldest mission site in Southern Arizona. Like San Xavier del Bac, Tumacacori was founded by the Jesuits who, because of Spain's mistrust, were eventually replaced by the Franciscans. No longer a functioning church, Tumacacori is now a national monument that has undergone significant renovation.
