Interlaken is a resort town situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz (hence, the name) in the german-speaking region of Switzerland. It serves as a base for skiers, mountaineers, and tourists (lots of them!!) due to its proximity to the Bernese Alps.
A very popular attraction is the ride up to "Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe" by cog train up a steep path and long tunnels ending up at an elevation of 3,454m (11,333ft), making it the highest train station in Europe. Construction of the rail lines started in 1896 and completed in 1912 which was quite an accomplishment considering the amount of tunneling required and the lack of mechanization back in those days.
