Variable Checkerspot, Euphydryas chalcedona

Checkerspot (presumably Variable Checkerspot) caterpillar, on Bee Plant at McClellan Ranch.

This caterpillar has eaten the Bee Plant leaf all around itself, but has left the center for a nap.
When I took this shot it was in a rest mode of some kind, not feeding. Their entire larval phase
is devoted to a limited number of activities: they eat leaves, they excrete, they sleep, they molt.
