Northern limit is the southern end of the North Carolina coast, so hardy enough for the UK, but does seem to need a hot humid summer to grow perceptibly. Growth in Bay of Plenty, NZ, is very slow, probably slower than is needed to keep up with loss from high winds. In some places birds remove it for nesting material.
