May 1889 - Death and debris from the Johnstown flood

Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Of the 2,209 people killed, more than 750 were never identified. Bodies were found as far
away as Cincinnati, and as late as 1911. (According to David McCullough in his brilliant
book THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD, this photo is most likely a fake, for although corpses were
strewn among the wreckage, few were found looking so neat and lean as this "victim".)
