Arrival, Recife, Brazil, 2010

The jagged skyline of Recife looms in the distance, its man-made towers dwarfed by natureís impressive display of storm clouds overhead. Our cruise ship neared Recifeís harbor just as the sun was setting behind the clouds, and I made this image just as a shaft of sunlight appeared within a sharply defined notch over the city. No matter how vast a city (Recife, Brazilís sixth largest metropolitan area, holds nearly four million people), nature always holds the upper hand.

Light and shadow can often produce energies that can make an image seem to dance, Tim. The rays exploding from the notch over the skyline, the height variations among the horizontal sweep of buildings, the variation in cloud thickness, and the extended shapes of the clouds themselves, along with the gilded horizon, all combine to suffuse this image with such energy. Thanks for noting it.

For me, there is a pulsing light and shadow here that almost makes the image dance.

Thanks, Rose -- it was a beautiful, and very unusual scene. I was delighted that I was able to do justice to it.
