Ghiberti "signed" his East Doors of the Florence Baptistery by including this small self-portrait in gilded bronze at about eye level on the inner edge of the left door.
It was unusual for artists to add their signatures to works of art at this time, but this image shows that the artist was justifiably proud of his creation.
