WW2 or earlier check Ted.jpg

unknown

This pic was taken by Robaire's father. We asked our expert Tedius for some info and reproduce his response without edit. Tedius is a character.

Hail Robaire!

Yep....looks like the time slot you mention. I take it that your father took this of someone (and it's not a photo of your father)
The radio with the row of five knobs and a square dial and knob is a 'home brew' job. In the centre but at the rear is the transmitter rack, also 'home brew'. It would have been on medium (MV), and high frequency (HF). There is a Morse code key sitting on the desk, just left of the radio. He (the operator) may have used it in that position (favoured by Yankee operators) or moved it to the leading edge of the desk when using it. Mine is screwed down at he edge of my desk. Also, a set of magnetic headphones, just in front of his book. The microphone looks like a home brew...carbon mic. His call sign displayed on the mike tells me that the station is Australian (VK) and is located in NSW (2) and the two letters following are those supplied by the P.M.G's Dept., to distinguish him fro all the other Amateur Radio operators.

Of the two letters, I could only make out the last (V). If it could be read, you could find out his name from past publications. However with deceased operators, they hold their call signs for two years before allotting them to someone else.I have some old Radio journals of the period and these always had a list of operators and their current call signs. I got these from our radio club. Looked for some today...but had a clean-up recently and can't find them! The 'QSL' cards on the walls show that he had an acknowledgement of a contact with some one (they agree to swap cards by snail-mail). They show that he'd contacted people in: New Zealand (ZL), USA (W), Canada (VE) and of course, other parts of Australia. With Australia, the number after VK is similar to our broadcast stations (ACT is VK1).I'll show this photo to some of the 'old timer' and see if I can get any more info.

Hope I've answered most of your questions and see you at the next function...Adios...saludos etc..
Tedius
