There's a slew of B-52's visible on the flightline along with scads of fighters on the far right side of the ramp. Homestead was a great Air Force Base back in the late 1950's and in the 60's and it's a shame that it was severely damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. The base's closure and eventual re-opening as a Reserve Air Base caused a huge number of retirees to move out of the area since the hospital, golf course, and numerous other services ceased to exist.
The existing Homestead Joint Reserve Air Base (HJARB) is only a fraction of the size of the previous base, with huge parcels of land given away to Miami-Dade County and other government agencies. The former golf course and the homes in that area are now a county park and homes on the southwest side of the golf course are now low income housing or something like that. The commissary was closed and combined with the exchange into the former exchange building and is now a BX Mart, a hybrid commissary/exchange used only in several other US locations. The BX Mart was pretty good in the early years but they eliminated a substantial amount of products and selections by installing a wide perpendicular aisle through the middle of the long aisles. The selections of available items is so poor that I'll never make a trip that far south again.
