Gallipoli and Dardanelles

Leaving Istanbul behind we headed down the European side of the Sea of Marmara to the Gallipoli Peninsula. This was the arena for the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915-16 in which the Allied Forces attempted to gain control of the Dardanelles, the strategic waterway leading to the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul, the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. After nine months of fighting and heavy casualities on both sides the Allied force withdrew. We arrived a couple of days before Anzac Day of 24th April which is the main commemoration day for the Anzac troops who were killed during the campaign.
We crossed the Dardanelles on the ferry from Eceabat to Canakkale and spent the night at the charming Tuscan Hotel.
