The mountains of Sutherland form a huge remote wilderness in Scotland. It is a harsh unforgiving place where eagles cruise high overhead and houses and their occupants are dotted about in tiny clusters with vast distances between them. I think it is seen at its best in winter and in particular in these circumstances when savage winter storms burst in one after another and blast the land with wind and fresh snow. The sky can go inky black and the snow capped peaks stand out fabulously against it.
