Gentoo Penguins

The Gentoo is an attractive, characterful medium-sized penguin that occurs across the Scotia Sea, on the Antarctic peninsula, and a range of sub-Antarctic islands. The majority of is population of perhaps 350,000 pairs is concentrated in the peninsula, South Georgia and the Falklands. It usually breeds in small colonies, mixing occasionally with other species as we saw (with Kings), and lays two eggs in early summer. It is rated as "Near Threatened", although populations in the Antarctic Peninsula have been increasing over the past twenty years or so.
