North of Fort Rock and the Christmas valley I follow a rough, dusty road north 10 miles. Soon the road becomes two-track which soons withers down to a trail. Here I find Derricks Cave. Maybe 40 feet tall here, it extends a good half mile into the earth. Two skylights (holes) illuminate the first 100 yards. I follow it in as far as my feable flashlight would allow but soon chicken out. If I had someone with me that I could outrun, I might have gone in deeper. Later I would find out from a BLM officer that cougar frequent the cave. Yikes!!
