I'm a little fixated with this landmark edifice: so decided to collect together all my photographs of it in one place... -- simply for my own edification!
The original GWR (Great Western Railway) line -- from Stratford-upon-Avon to Cheltenham -- was first built in the 1860s. It was doubled in the early 1910s; and then closed in 1975.
"The largest engineering structure [on the line] is Stannals Bridge, a steel girder structure, crossing the River Avon. The structure does not appear to have been repainted since Warwickshire County Council acquired ownership in the early 1980s and is showing signs of corrosion and neglect." Stratford-on-Avon District Council
"...where the old Great Western main rail route south of Stratford crosses the River Avon on the steel girder bridge, known as Stannals Bridge. It is the property now of Warwickshire County Council and is in dire need of maintenance. If it is left, it will fail and be a total loss. Minimal regular maintenance now could keep it in a fit state for the line to be restored at a future date but the funds required are being denied. Should this be so?" David Goodman
