"The lantern itself is a central 'teaching' part of the building.
People know the characteristic outline of the Cathedral and expect to see the lantern; they would be very disaffected if it were removed.
It is a lantern -- a lighthouse... no less. In the evening, as darkness falls, the lights within the Lantern shine out and are visible for all who pass by.

"This part of the Cathedral, the lantern,
was, from a construction point of view, something of a strategic withdrawal.
The original plan encompassed a great octagonal tower. This could not be achieved:
the War, expense, workforce, materials and other factors conspired to make the first intention impossible.

[as] untested materials proved to be unsatisfactory and resulted in the loss of John Hayward's exquisite windows.
Only one window of his work remains and this is in St Martin's Chapel.
