This is First Broad Drive, described as a "beautiful avenue lined with green and copper beeches".
It was cut through the woods -- part of the Earl of Pembroke's Wilton estate -- during the 1840s;
and traces the course of an earlier Roman road that once ran from the Mendip lead mines to the channel ports.
