This is the main internal staircase up to the Great Hall.
"The doorway was redesigned in the 1570s
as part of Sir Matthew Arundell's refurbishment of the medieval house.
It echoes a Roman triumphal arch, emphasising the importance of the approach to the Hall.
Brightly painted, perhaps in red, green, black and gold, its Italianate design would have provided a dramatic contrast
to the Gothic windows of the Hall and the fashionable Elizabethan clothing of those who lived and worked here."
