Following a three-year programme of extensive conservation works by English Heritage, the castle has been fully re-opened;
and you can, in fact, climb the stairs all the way up to the third floor, now, on this side of the castle....
This mostly intact eastern side of the castle shows off the quality of stone used in its building.
In the main, Tisbury Greensand was used (which gives parts of the building an eery green glow, inside),
with Chilmark limestone (as featured in nearby Salisbury Cathedral, etc.) used for the more decorative features.
This is "the remaining carved corner turret.
The others were destroyed during the Civil War".
