It is pronounced Dar-wen, really; but you'll never find a local calling it anything other than 'Darren' whilst within spitting distance of it...! It's just a bit of a local joke, that's all...! (Although we do like to remind people occasionally that we're not in any way part of Australia... ;-)

I love northern towns, and thanks for putting me right on the pronounciation. I have always pronounced with the W.
