When I came to Singapore in early 1986 for a resettlement flight to Canada, I was impressed by a modern, clean, civilized, English-speaking Singapore. Yet after 25 years living in Canada and frequenting the U.S., I was impressed by Singapore again in my revisit. This city state has still been an Asian sparkling diamond. It is still modern, clean, civilized, safe, English-fluent and MORE FUN than it used to be, thanks to a more realistic government (yes, there are casinos and prostitution in Singapore). Of all Asian cities, Westerners should feel most at home in this island state, because it's the only Asian country where English is the official language. Shopping malls, restaurants and entertainment locations are crowded with young Singaporeans. You cannot help admiring this vibrant, dynamic, highly civilized small country.
