Before NYU took control of this property, the area, where the glass NYU Mail building is now, was the main entrance to the Washington Square Village (WSV) Sasaki Garden and Landscape from LaGuardia Place, inviting the public to enjoy the interior gardens. More than 20 years ago, the entrance was closed with a NYU locked gate. A few years later NYU blocked the entrance with the construction of their mail services building. The current NYC Government and NYU2031 Plan calls for the destruction of these service buildings and garden areas from LaGuardia Place to Mercer Street to build 2 new boomerang skyscraper buildings with connecting pathways that will destroy street park strips, a prized children's playground away from street traffic, the WSV Sasaki Garden and Landscape, and well over 400 mature trees and bushes. NYU has called a small garden plot in their plan - a "Philosophy Garden". It is not clear what the NYC Government and NYU plan to do with Mayor LaGuardia's statue.

Legal proceedings are pending to stop the NYU and current NYC Government from executing this ill conceived plan.
