This garden is slated to be destroyed by New York University's 2031 construction plan with a "boomerang" skyscraper on this eastern horizon and another one on the western horizon blocking out about half of the skyline you see in this photo.
These skyscrapers will be connected by a series of walkways between the two giant skyscrapers with the destruction of about 100 trees and many more bushes and plants.
This unique landmark Hideo Sasaki Garden could be destroyed if Mayor Bloomberg gives his approval by this fall.

A recent NY Times article and comments at http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/arts/design/nyu2031-universitys-plans-for-greenwich-village.html?ref=arts expresses a current discussion about the plan.
