Frank & John Shafer, ranchers in the area in 1914, cut a steep trail in the canyon so they could graze their cattle at the bottom near the Colorado River in winter. The cattle grazed on the mesa tops in the summer. In the 1950's the trail was widened to carry ore via trucks to Moab. In the recent years it has been used by the movie industry; Thelma and Louise took their final leap into the canyon from Fossil Point, now named Thelma and Louise Point. Some visitors to Canyonlands drive the steep and curvy one lane road today which can take 2 days and is 100 miles in length.
