The Northern Commercial Company is part of Alaskan history. In the old days, when it was still called Alaska Commercial Company, it ran village stores that sold groceries and general merchandise to trappers, explorers and gold seekers, and also served as post office, community hall, courtroom, marriage parlor, funeral home and a safe haven for travelers.
In 1974 the company was sold and divided into three branches. Many village stores were closed.
