Coldfoot

Alaska

Coldfoot restaurant and bar. According to 'The Milepost' the 'truckers table' at the restaurant is a good place to get news on the Dalton Highway. The adjoining bar is the last place on the drive north -or the first place on the drive south- that serves alcohol.

Coldfoot, in the southern foothills of the Brooks Range, was a goldmining center in the early 1900's and served as a construction camp for the Alaska Pipeline in the 1970's. Today's Coldfoot evolved from a hamburger stand operating out of a bus. It offers basic motel lodging, 24 hour restaurant and bar, gas station, tire and vehicle repair shop, truckstop, 3.500-foot air strip, RV park, gift shop and laundromat for travelers on the Dalton Highway (mile 175). A musher keeps his huskies and malamutes on a dog lot right behind the motel (and those dogs can be loud).
A few historic buildings and a cemetery from the goldrush days remain. The attractive 'Arctic Interagency Visitor Center' is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., from late May until early September. Five miles north of Coldfoot on the Dalton are Marion Creek Campground (BLM) and Marion Creek trailhead.
