A winter favorite for the people of Fairbanks and a summer favorite for tourists: the Chena Hot Springs resort. Just an hour's drive from Fairbanks one can soak in indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs filled with 100-degree mineral water that promises to relax, take away cabin fever and rejuvinate. And it does!
The hot springs were discovered in 1905 by gold prospectors seeking to ease their rheumatism brought on by grueling work and poor diets. By 1912 Chena Hot Springs had become the premier resort of interior Alaska.
Chena Hot Springs today features hotel rooms, cabins, a campground, a bar and restaurant, and an air strip. It offers gold panning, aurora watching, horseback riding, dogsled rides, snow machine rides, ice-fishing, and many other outdoor and indoor sports.
