Fairbanks

Fairbanks, Alaska

North Cushman Street parking lot in March 2000

It must have been quite a place in the early days of captain E.T. Barnette, gold miner Felix Pedro en judge James Wickersham. Not many historic buildings remain today in downtown Fairbanks. Fires and floods have left their traces, and obviously for many years the preservation of history was not on the city's mind. That may have changed now but all that is left from the early days are a few pioneer log cabins and the old Immaculate Conception Church. Plaques and markers, some in very odd places, tell stories of what used to be. Most of the modern downtown buildings were not build for their good looks and the general layout is rather haphazard.

Guest: What a wonderful site. The photo's are awesome. My brother Hap Ryder worked at the Big I (Across from the Immaculate Conception Church) for over 45 years when Jack Sexton was owner. Hap fell in love with Fairbanks from the moment he put his foot on the ground of the First Frontier. He started by teaching in Fairbanks and also directed many plays (till his death) at the Riverfront Theatre (his first love). I never saw a picture of the Riverfront Theatre but would love someday to run across a picture of the Theatre. Hap would visit me for a few weeks every winter in FL but always anxious to return to what he would call "Home". After viewing these awesome photo's, I can see why he called it "Home". He left many of his "Fairbanks FamilY" that he loved so much when he passed on in March of 2007.
