The bird on the right is a very confused and extremely stressed Song Sparrow. The bird on the left is a baby
Brown-headed Cowbird that was following the Song Sparrow from limb to limb and continuously making the
"I want food" sound commonly heard from baby birds. The Song Sparrow is obviously a victim of Cowbird nesting
habits, where the female Cowbird lays its eggs in nests of other birds, then flies off. When the egg hatches, the
owner of the nest has a real surprise - in this case, a baby that is much larger than the mother. The Song Sparrow
was attempting to elude the Cowbird, bouncing from limb to limb and tree to tree, but the Cowbird was always just
inches away. When last seen the Sparrow flew at high speed over a nearby field and dived into the underbrush,
with the Cowbird inches behind. Another photo of the pair is below. The photos were taken at Sharon Woods
Metro Park near Columbus, Ohio. Additional bird images are in my Animals gallery.
