Fort Washington stands on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River in southwestern Maryland, just upriver
from George Washington's Mount Vernon home in Virginia. The original fort was built in 1809 but was destroyed
by its own troops during the War of 1812 to prevent it from falling into British hands. It was rebuilt in 1824.
The Fort Washington Lighthouse, at right, was built in 1857.
