This is a gallery in progress of several trips to Cappadocia (Kapadokya), the land of lunar landscapes, surreal scenery, fairy chimneys, underground cities, ancient churches and cave dwellings.

Cappadocia was once the heart of the ancient Hittite Empire, then a Roman and Byzantine province, during which time it became a refuge for the early Christians. Its landscape consists of soft volcanic tuff scupted over millennia into fantastic shapes by water and erosion, with huge stone mushrooms and fairy chimneys, soft ridges and deep valleys, all riddled with numerous ancient cave dwellings and subterranean honeycomb cities. It is unique in the world and an absolutely fascinating place to visit.

I've started with some older pictures but am currently working on a full weekend visit to the region and hope to add pictures as they are done. The newest pictures start after "Erciyes Dag from Uçhisar." Although I normally shoot with a Nikon D70, I was trying out my new Sony H1; the majority of images are with the H1 (unless otherwise indicated).
