I was stationed at the Army Hospital in 1970-71 in the Pharmacy....and worked in some of the outlying clinics also. My wife and I lived "on the economy" not to far away. She worked as an Occupational Therapist with military families and children at Camp Kue(sp). We were stationed with and lived adjacent to another recently married couple from California. And the best news is that the other couple and us are returning together after almost 50 years. We are arriving on a Cruise Ship in May of this year and are only going to be on the island for about 8 hours, but if anyone knows of someone that could serve as a guide for us for a day to show us around the island, we would be eternally grateful!! Your pictures are beautiful and bring back so many wonderful memories!

My wife and I were stationed at Naha from 1963-1966 and while off base lived at #36 New Oroku in a concrete block hovel. What a start for newly weds. Our son was born up at Camp Kue in 1965. Our most cherished memories are out first years of marriage at Naha. We have now been married over 50 years. Was stationed at KAB from 1962-1964. Lived off base in an area called Awase, used gate 2 to enter Kadena each day. Col George B. Simler was Wing Commander for part of my tour there. Have seen recent pictures of Okinawa and cannot believe the difference.

My father was Navy stationed at Naha from '69 to '71. Family was there from '70 to '71. I really loved it there and really wanted him to re-up there. He was not happy, so we came back to the states. Have contact with people that were there long after Japan took full control back. Just not the same. Found that making a effort to learn the language and take part in the culture helped a lot. Made a great difference when one shopped on the local economy in places like black market alley to be able to deal with the merchants in their language. Really am glad to have had the opportunity to live there.

I was thrilled to find your sight - thank you! I was an AF brat there from 59 to 67. We lived in a neighborhood outside of Sukiran, I think it was called Park Place. Like Carol, we had horses at the house that I would ride all over, all day, literally. I also rode to Kadena stables and kept my horse there for a few days for a show. I'm pretty sure I would have met her, as small as it was. Like another writer said, I too, cried for several months when we had to go back states because our parents divorced. She apparently didn't like the island as much as he did and he stayed for a few years. So good to talk as I have no other contacts from that important time.

I was a Marine at Torii Station 73-74 (16 mos). I remember the Okinawan people as being wonderful, once you earned their trust. Obviously they were used to bring taken advantage of & had to learn to adapt to surviv,, especially after their home was given to the Japanese. 2 totally different cultures. Thank you for sharing your pictures.

You have taken me down memory lane. I was an army wife on Okinawa 55-57. We lived in Mashinato-Naha for a few months and then moved to Sukiran. These names have changed since then. Have a son born in Mercy, the old quonset hut hospital. We had one paved road and the speed limit was 35 MPH island wide. The only pictures that I can connect to are the old residence and the tomb in the hillside, and of course the beautiful beach and sea. There were still remains of bombed out ships off shore at that time. The people were wonderful. I loved living there. Would love to go back and see it today.

My husband was stationed at Kadena Air Force base from 77-80. We loved it there, we lived off base in an aptpartment building called Moromi Mansions. Don't know if anyone here remembers this place.

Okinawa to me was like going back into time with the slender of beauty. I was there from 89-95 amd retired from kadena. Wanted to stay but no employment available at that time. Best friend on Okinawa was Isao Oshiro who ownes BC used cars. Waht an adventure and what a ride. Would go back in a heart beat to stay forever.

JOHN C HARDWICK I lived on Okinawa from Nov 51 thru Aug 63 and then as a civilian working for the US Army from Apr67 thru Jul 72. I have many fond memories of my years there. It was a beautiful island then and now. The beaches have to be some the finest anywhere. I left to finish my degree at the Univ of MD and I still live near the campus. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could find the time but will always treasure my time there.

My husband is a contractor who has been at Camp Foster, OKI for about 6 weeks now. He says he has "nothing to do" at night after work other than go to the bars. I'm not really thrilled about that so I am trying to give him some healthier alternatives. Can you or anyone provide some suggestions? He will be there 6 more weeks so he definitely needs some good ideas. To keep myself busy I have began publishing a new online magazine for women, called theREALmeMAGAZINE.com It has kept me sane! Thank you for the beautiful color pics. When I was stationed on Okinawa at White Beach in 59 & 60,all the pics were black&white. It was, and hopefully still is, a magical place. Beautiful people,beautiful weather,gorgeous landscape,stunning sea scapes and sunsets. Several of my friends and I wanted to extend our tour of duty there. I have wonderful memories of that special place,and my special friend. I hope to make a trip back there,it is at the top of my bucket list.

My father was stationed in Okinawa from 1959 to 1961. It is a beautiful and deeply spiritual place. After we returned to the mainland I was so homesick I dreamed each night that I flew there and looked down on all my favorite people and places. I woke my parents every night sobbing uncontrollably. This went on for months. Now I am almost an old woman and yet I still think of Okinawa as my true home.What a blessing it was to be able to live there! I am so grateful for the experience. Thank you for the photos.

Thank you for posting these picture of Okinawa. I was stationed there from May 1973 - Nov 1975. To this day I see things, here things that remind me of that beautiful place. The people were friendly the food was delicious. Every weekend I would go exploring and tried to find places to eat that didn't have English in the front window to get the real deal. I used to hang out at the USO club and play spades game after game. Of course there was the dance every Saturday night where we would dance with the local college girls allowed on base to take part with all the activities offer at the USO. I was assigned to the 603rd Massq (MAC) maint. admin dept.

I compare my pictures of 67-68 with yours. The rock has become easier on the eyes but I miss the pig-tail turms on the graveled roads. Lived in Q-huts on Camp Kue and worked at Hamby Field in weather/intel. Our paths could have crossed I was there to as a military dependant for 2 years age 9and 10 Ilived off base the first year by Kadena AFB moved into the new housing on base kind of a duplex in a court at the bottom of a mountain. The base opened up for locals once a year as the cave contained deceased locals. I've been to leprosy island. Lined up in school for sugar cubes and shots. Iremember the jelly fish. The warm typhoons, my dad tieing down the garbage cans. The huge bugs. The walls of hibiscus. Add some of these memories to yours, because you sure added to mine

Beautiful shots. They bring back lots of memories. Dad (James D.C. Robinson) was Base Commander of Kadena circa 64-67. My sister and I were quite young. Many of my first vivid childhood memories were of Okinawa. I'm an M&K primary schooler myself. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Marsh. I took Judo lessons on base in a quonset hut under a fellow named Sgt. Peavy. Our family was close to the Greer family. Chaplain Greer conducted Sunday services at "St. Popcorn's Cathedral". I can't remember if it was the Keystone or the Olympic theater, but it was one of them. The Greers lived in Awase somewhere and we lived off of Kadena circle until they built Clark Vista. We became some of the first residents of Clark Vista when it was completed. I remember having quite a collection of frag chunks and spent shell casings along with other tidbit mementos of battle action that had obviously occurred right in our back yard. I remember playing on skateboards, racing slot cars on base and in downtown Koza, walking for very long distances through huge freshly constructed storm drains, exploring tombs right behind our new typhoon-proof home, watching huge harvest-moon-rise right at the other end of the main street in Clark Vista, swimming at Ishikawa beach, climbing around in the banyan tree right beside the ice factory, vacationing at Okuma rec center and wading through the tidal pools at white beach...So much more as well. Mom and Dad passed away several years ago at age 87 and 90 respectively. I still have all of their old photos and color slides of the time in Okinawa. Right now, I'm pretty motivated to dig them out of the boxes and begin going through them again. Thank you again for taking the time to upload these beautiful pictures. Your pictures are beautiful, I remember so much of Okinawa, from a non military view. lived 71-73 with my parents Dad was with Gulf/texaco refining. I don't think I could even get around on the ROCK like I did back then. Anybody remember the outdoor Rock concerts? I lived at the top of the hill below Kadena with a spectacular view of the sea and Highway 58? I worked at Takahashi dental clinic and went to college night classes at Kubasaki high school. I belonged to the International club, snorkeled off island many times. frequented Kadena officers club.I have been looking for TIM and MIKE, military friends I had back then. Anybody know of any currant blogs about Okinawa back in the 70's? Thanks for the pictures, they brought back a flood of memories. I still can hear the Drums from the Oban festivals.

I was at Camp Hauge 69-71 and my duty was at the ammo dump right at the end of Kadena air base runway.It is a time I will cherrish forever,I tried to travel as much as I could and saw many people and little towns.I can remember some of the writing we all put on the bombs that were loaded at Kadena heade for nam they never read them but Im sure they knew when they arrived.The pics show how much it has changed but it was still beautiful back then and Im glad I got to enjoy my time there.Thanks for the wonderful pictures as I sit here in awe Bob

I lived on Kishaba Terrace as a child; my dad, Pierce Mounts, was a colonel, US Army stationed there in 1969-1972. I remember the "top of hte Rock" and the field ehind our house with a swingset and a ditch that ran through the field. I was tryin gto find a picture of hte old housing area but I can't seem to find it - if anyone out there hsa any info I'd be interested to see it!

Wonderful pics. I was there with the army 1968 -1970. Got my Private Pilot license at Kadena Flying Club at the old Yomitan airfield. I think it cost about $200!!! Loved the snorkeling on the East China Sea side ( no sea snake problems ). Fabulous variety of tropical fish, coral, etc. Thanks to your site I'm going back asap. The Okinawan people were wonderful. Great photos! I just got back from a few days in Oki, staying on Kadena. Relived memories from my childhood there from '67 - '72. Camp Kue housing (now Lester) is unchanged. Stepped inside the Navy hospital there, been close to 40 years, and it also feels the same. Interesting to note the special typhoon only doors at the hospital And the tsunami warning signs. Miss Okinawa.

I was there part of 1969 and 1970. It sure has changed alot since then. I was stationed part of the time at Gesashi Loran Station and part of the time at Light house Attendent Statio Naha in the United States Coast Guard. It was great duty.

I want to thank you SOOOO much for this website! I lived in Okinawa from 1998-2001. I was devastated when we had to PCS back to the states. These pics have brought tears to my eyes from all the wonderful memories. I lived in Kadena Cho. Right next to the Mizugama Sea wall. That is where most people went diving. I could see Devil's Cove from my house. I never lived on base. Thank you again for sharing. I hope you don't mind if I share this on facebook. I have many friends that I met over there and I know they will love this as much as I do. Domo!

These photos make me home sick. I spent a lot of time just out side of gate 5. of Kadena, at a photo shop, they had a little girl named Cheaka, who I would watch while her mother would go shoping. This was in 1961 and 1962. Cheake was borned in 1960. Sure miss her.

I got orders to go to Kadena AFB but I'm in the Army what does this mean? Will I be stationed at Torii or is it possible for me to be stationed a Kadena? I'm a Fueler. Anyways love the pictures Im excited to go but i fear being in the field to long.. Will that be a problem in Okinawa ?

These photos has reignited my nostalgia about Okinawa. Your roving lenses captured some of the best scenery that lingers in my dreams.I can't stay for a week without browsing through them. Okinawa is a special place for me and it has given me some immeasurable feelings. Interestingly, the Habu that I feared so much is one of the photos but I never had the opportunity to see one whilst I was there.

This is for you nubbies and for a little history about Camp Kinser, I was stationed at Kinser when it was about 4 mi. east of gate two Kadna AFB in 68-69, then it was a Seabee base barrowed from the Marines. Now it is known as Camp Shields.I like to know what happened to the "ugly" "but our ugly "concrete base entrance marker. We didn't have a perimeter fence back then and our gates where one hole outhouses converted to field phone guard shacks"practical if not primitive" I too, remember the B-52's and SR-71's leaving every afternoon for Nam and having to work in the Okinawaian 'Georgia red clay' during the rainny season. It's an experiance I wouldn't trade for a million.Okinawa is a unique and beautiful place. Thanks for the memories M.A.

wAS sTATIONED IN oKINAWA, kADENA afb 63-64. I liked in then, but we had nothing like it is now. My grandson is going to be stationed at Torri next year. He will have a lot more fun then I did I think. He asked me about the night life and I told him about Kosa and BC street. There was so much water sports, I lurned to dive on white beach and on the outer islands. Maybe I will come back some day

We were stationed there from 1968-70. And my nephew, who is in the Air Force, will be stationed there for three years starting next May. I can't wait to visit him. I'm guessing I won't be able to recognize any landmarks, though I understand Jiro Bakery is still there.

I was stationed there from Sep 04 to Sep 06. I met my wife there who is Okinawan, and now we have a beautiful 2 year old girl. Your pics brought back some recent memories. Okinawa is probably one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been. Thanks so much for posting them.

I was just "fooling around" and came across this sight. I lived in Koza outside of Kadena AFB for over two years, 1968-1970, as my ex-husband worked up at Ona Pt. So much of what I see in these pictures is so totally different from my memories of the island then. I was just a young bride and so fascinated with the opportunity to be there with all of the wonderful experiences. Kobe beef at the hotel; pastries from the bakeries, the doll factory, the sake factory with a snake in the bottle, the USO tours for the wives, the shops on BC street and driving around the island at a snail's pace in our $100 car. Of course, the sad part was the realization that when those B-52's took off in flight over our heads, we noticed the bombs tied to the underneath as they roared towards Viet Nam. Okinawa cemented my interest in the Orient long before I ever landed in Naha. As a child, I was fascinated by the culture. It was a pleasure to have such a wonderful opportunity to live there. When, we returned to the states, I pursued the adoption of a beautiful baby girl from Viet Nam. Out of the horrors of a war, this special person is now a research scientist working on diseases of the lungs. Okinawa became the "key" to a new world for me.

The pictures have "soul"; a wonderful monument for all that have had the wonderful experience of living in Okinawa and to the great people of Okinawa. My Dad was USAF, SAC-MMS stationed to Kadena and I have such happy and very few sad memories of Okinawa. The people of Okinawa in 1964-1966 were generous, kind and very proud to share their life/heritage/culture with this, then 8 year girl. They taught me that hard work was very rewarding, sharing and caring for all you encountered was important. I was always given the oppurtunity to share meals; given gifts beyond comprehension; seashells, octopus, coral snake...what a memorable experience! I was safe there and respectful of the people I encountered.The sadness; Suicide Hill. I was a brownie and we went to Suicide Hill; it changed me forever. How brave and honorable the Okinawians were to endure a war that caused so much suffering and loss. Thank you!

I was stationed at Hq. Co. IX Corps at Camp Kue from 1963 to 1964. US Army. The photos are lovely but far different then when I was there in the early 63 and late 64. Not a lot of paved roads then. Great Pics, I was stationed at the Navay Regional Medical Center 1979-1980 on 4W and Outpatient clinic. It was a great first duty station. I remeber Charlies Taco's, Sams By the Sea, Stucky Pizza, the Rocker Club, Sgt Pepers and China Pete's near Gate 2 street. Also making Cassette tapes from reel to reel at Special Services at Kedena AFB.

Tonight I was telling my wife my favorite story about Charlies Tacos. I was there (Army) at Camp Kue Hospital, 1969. I think Charlies had just opened up. A friend (after a night of drinking) set the 1st record for most tacos eaten. Charlie wrote the records on a blackboard he kept menus on. That didn't last long as a record before a Marine, then and Airman, then another Marine set new records. He only had his kitchen and I think 5 booths. He would get up early and make tacos and deliver them to the hospital for lunch when we preordered. Great memories of the Okinawa and my friends there.

I was stationed there for five months with the 327th Comm Recon on my way home from Korea, in 1952. I remember mostly the war debris scattered all over the island and in the harbor, that infamous castle on the hill, and those humongous habu snakes. Japan was in the process of reclaiming the island. Didn't look anything like your beautiful pictures.

My father was stationed at Ft Buckner from 1967 - 1968. I went to Adams Elementary on post ( 4th grade ). We lived in Nakanishi first then in Machinato. We only live there for 11 months but that was the greatest 11 months of my life. Okinawa was an awesome place to live. So beautiful and such nice people. I was stationed at Kadena in 71-72. Best tour of my time in the AF. Lived off base just outside Gate 2. Favorite hangout was the Bar Buckingham. spent a lot of time at Moon Beach. Sure has changed a lot. Thanks for the great photos. Wish I could go back and do that time over and over.

My dad was stationed there and we lived off base until they moved us to Machinato in the late 60's until 1972 and we were got out in a hurry due to uprising tesions at that time. My father was a diver and his job was proccessing many of the jeeps and other military vehich;es coming through there to be proccessed from vietnam. We watched my dad and his bussy as they're sale boat flipped over and they grabbed onto a large piece of drift wood and by holding onto that, they were able to get most of the water out of the sail boat and they pulled it in. We watched from 8 am until juat about dark as they got closer to the beach some local fisherman took thier boats out and helped them in. We still have that piece of drift wood. My father traeated it and it has passed through the family since his death, we take turns having it. Those pictures have helped bring back some of the best times in my life as we spent every weekend, hliday etc at the beach and I loved the culture and the people. Thanks! My last name is Betts too.

I was at Torii Station, my first overseas duty with Army Security Agency 67-68. I loved Okinawa and her people. I went back in 82 alot changed. I often wonder what happened to my lady friend Kuniko Kamiyamo. She must be around 64 or so now. I hope God has blessed her life.

I remember as a child, there used to be breakers that were in the shape of concrete jacks. I was wondering if they were still there or if they've been replaced. A long time forgogtten as Waylon Jennings sings. Your photo album is superb. I was stationed at both Hansen and later Schwab with the 9th Marines. They wouldn't let us return stateside until we got stuff out of our system from VN. I was probably among the handful of Marines who didn't always live in bars (although I did my share of drinking). I went to (sp!) Ishikawa and spent the weekend with a family. I gave blood in Naha to save a bar owner's life who had been injured in a car wreck by a drunk Marine. I saw the sea snakes in the forbidden swimming zone (what was I doing there?) off Schwab. I sailed on my third from Red Beach aboard the Tuscaloosa. It was exotic, sometimes fun and I kind of miss it. But I like our good old USA Northeast. Semper Fi, Grunts. Fred Carr

Dear Helen, Thank you so much for your photo account of what Okinawa has become over the last 55 years. From 1952 thru 1954 I lived there as a member of the military. There was only one paved highway Rt 1 which ran from Naha to Kadena. Most of what you've pictured was not there when I was, almost all of the town names are new to me. Great pictures that brought back many memories. My father was stationed on Okinawa back in 1974-1977 and our family was so lucky to have been able to go with him. It was the perfect time with me attending high school and developing an interest in both photography and stereo equipment. We also enjoyed a very high dollar-yen exchange rate back then, so everything was cheap. I imagine everything has changed so much since then and would love to re-visit the island sometime.

I just retired from the Navy from Okinawa and, luckily, my wife is Japanese. We are already planning to move back there for good at some point. I spent 10 of my 20 years in the Navy there. I worked at the hospital on Camp Lester. It will be nice to move there for good. I just wanted to at least give the States one more chance before we finally decided. We have been back for 4 months and our minds are already made up.

Dear Helen, These are beautiful photos of Okinawa. Much has changed since I was there in 75 to 77. Please let everyone know to cherish every moment they have there. I unfortunately took it for granted and now after thirty two years find myself at times very sadden to the point of tears for not realizing just what I was given the chance to see and enjoy. I have very few memories and very few photos which are like the old Polaroid camera. I worked in the (what was then Army Hospital). I had read where the hospital was going to be torn down and relocated else where on the island. I wanted to go back but after seeing photos as to what Okinawa is today, it just wouln't be the same. I don't remember any resorts or beaches like the ones shown in the pictures at all. Oh, and my daughters name is Helen as that was my mothers name. Take care and God Bless

I was born on Okinawa in 1957; in fact, my mom and brother, too. after looking at these pictures, I'm convinced even more how home sick I am. My relatives all still live there (mom's side of the family). My uncle lives in one of those traditional homes in Urasoe. I'm ready to go back to my "island." Now I know why my Dad loved it so. I was blessed to be stationed on Okinawa from 1980 to 1984. It is the most beautiful place I have ever lived. We used to go up to the northern part of the island and camp out in a cave that was right on the beach and not see another person the entire stay. Such an awesome place to be stationed, lots of fun night life too. I sure hope I can go back for a visit one day!

I Lived in Okinawa from 1963 to 1968 when my father was stationed there He was Killed in 1968 and we had to leave they sent us a picture of a building that had his name on it. I was wondering what they did with those buildings or if they still stand My Father was In the First Special Forces Green Beret's. We lived in Kadena, and Fatema. I enjoyed the pictures, But if you could find out any info on those building's I would appreciate it. My Father's name was SGT Major William H. Ryan

Thank you for sharing your lovely photos. I was fortunate enough to enjoy this beautiful island and its people from 2/70 to 4/72 and as others have said, I will never forget it. We had two sons born on Okinawa and someday I hope to go back. The people were the most kind and gentle souls I have ever met and I have lived in many parts of this wonderful world! My Air Force father was assigned to Kadena AB three times -- 1964-67, 1969-73 and 1976-81 -- with me and my sis graduating from Kubasaki High School in '80 and '81 respectively. For a military brat who's traveled the world, Okinawa will be always be home to me... and I hope to make it back in 2007 for my first visit since '81.Although the urban areas have undergone a major transformation, a short drive north can quickly transport one back to the Okinawa of our youth.

Hi Helen, I am enjoying your pictures, over and over again. I was born on Okinawa and lived there until I was 16. We moved to the US in 1966. In 2003, my family and I met you -- very briefly -- at the Memorial Day event in August. We put flowers at the memorial with you and your husband. I have pictures of us in our memory album of the trip. That trip was the first since we left in '66. What a wonderful visit and hopefully the first of many. We were hoping to return this Fall, but I don't think it will happen, so hopefully we'll return in the Fall of 2007. Let me say thank you for taking these most beautiful pictures and posting them for all to enjoy. I think that even those who have not experienced the beauty and grace of Okinawa and the people that live there will enjoy your shots. Thank you.

I lived there from 1966 to 1969. It has changed quite a bit I can see. We owned a house in Oyama, on the top terrace just below the Futema perimeter fence. We had a great veiw of the East China sea and Camp Mercy. I was 12-15 at the time and it was a great time. I got to camp all over the island with the boy scouts. Thanks for the pictures.

Dang...I spent most of my life on this island, from Naha to Nago, spent nites on the beaches, kicked it at Gate 2 and Kokusai street...the day i left i vowed to be back and spend the rest of my life there...okinawa is a whole different world, it's not really part of mainland, not to americanized(<Spellin)...the people get all my respect, hope to be back there soon sittin on the seawall near Dragon's Palace...dang....almost does brings tears to think on it there. don't realize how much you miss it until ur gone, it's pretty much my home, like adjusting to livin in the united states is the complicated part...would give anything to walk around jusco wit my friends again or walk the Halls of Kubasaki Highschool on Camp Butler/Kishaba......love the pics

Hi, I wanted to thank you for posting your stunning pictures of Okinawa. It brings tears to my eyes. My family was stationed there from Nov2002-June2003. It was a short but sweet tour. We had to leave abruptly for health reasons concerning our newborn. He was born at 35 weeks gestation and had to stay in the NICU. We were to take him home with us a week after his birth, but Doctors discovered a heart murmur, upon that they did a scan of his heart and found that he had Tetrology of Fallot. We were on a C-130 within hours of diagnosis. I've never been back. It's just sad because I made wonderful friends there and never got to say goodbye. Our son had heart surgery in Nov 2004 and is happily doing quite well. We were told we would never get to be stationed there again. I really loved that place, it felt like home. The people there are so wonderfully genuine. Thanks to the people at Saki Corporation for making me feel like family. Thanks again to you, Helen for the wonderful photographs of a beautiful people. I have enjoyed looking at your many find pictures of Okinawa. I was station there with my father in 1959-62! I passed though again in 71. My what a lot has changed! But the beaches seem familiar. Thank you for looking! Yes, as rule I use center-weighted metering, although occasionally will use spot (but rarely matrix). A long time ago when I was really doing a lot of experimenting with my 707 and then 717, I just found that I liked the results better with that method. I wish I had some examples to show, but I don't think I kept those tests. Helen

Hi, Nice pictures. I noticed that you use center weighted for light metering for all of your pics. Any reason why? As suppose to matrix (Multi).

Great pictures! Was there late July(hot!!) w/ mixed expectations as an okinawan-american. But not only a beautiful place as your pictures show, beautiful & accepting people as well. Looking forward to going back someday.
