This is the National Christmas Tree, located just behind the White House, with the Washington Monument off in the distance. I originally had the idea of having the White House or a more visible monument in the background, but we weren't allowed to enter the area until after the president's motorcade had passed by so it got too dark for the monument, and the shot simply didn't work with the White House.
