Last month Capitol Hill was the host of another one of DC’s Open Streets events during which all streets near Lincoln Park were closed to traffic but open to residents, who could enjoy the many booths and activities lining the major avenues. It was fun to visit but proved a major (and very time-consuming) problem for us to get from our parking space near the dry cleaners to our home, a mere two blocks away.
“Open Streets is a global initiative that offers communities the opportunity to experience their streets in an innovative way. Open Streets events temporarily close roadways to vehicles to provide safe spaces for walking, biking, skating, and other social activities.
“Open Streets events help users reimagine public space to prioritize people over cars, provide easy access to recreation and other health-oriented programming, and promote economic development by supporting local businesses.” (from the Open Streets DC website)
