Stranded in our own home

Although the snow fell all day Monday, dropping around 8 inches in DC, the temperatures have stayed well below freezing during the day and under 20 degrees F at night. The District government has not plowed the alley behind our house, and as a result we can’t get out of it by car due to the large amount of snow on the ground and by foot due to all the ice. There’s also so much ice on our deck and stairs, I can’t risk going outside with my broken arm, with the result that I’ve had to cancel several appointments because I simply couldn’t get there. It’s supposed to snow again on Friday night, but only a couple of inches, and the temperature is predicted to rise to around 37 degrees on Sunday and sunny, so hopefully some of the snow and ice will melt.

Great image depicting the situation you describe, Winter showing its harsher features here.

Oh that's not a good look at all...I'm pleased I live in a sub tropical region.

This is the most interesting ice sculpture!
I hope the melting happens soon!

A virtual prison made of ice. The icicles are like prison bars. V

It is not a pleasant feeling to be stranded with unplowed roads and icy/snowy conditions. I hope things return to more usual conditions for you ASAP. Your shot is a good graphic accompaniment to the text. V

Oh dear, that’s awful when you are stranded like that. Hope it thaws quickly.
Nirvan Hope10-Jan-2025 20:55
You might be stranded, but of course you knew what to do - take great photos of whatever is nearby, and this is the great icicles! Missing out on ice shots here....

A typical Canadian scene Helen. Welcome to Canada LOL.
Carl Carbone10-Jan-2025 18:43
Ice is much less preferable to snow. Stay safe!
Dwight Rankine10-Jan-2025 16:02
Wow! You guys are getting it. I would smile but it's freezing here at -8 C. and no snow. Nice shot.
hayl10-Jan-2025 15:35
Brrr, not the usual DC weather for you. Queenie is probably enjoying having you stuck inside with her.
Dan Greenberg10-Jan-2025 15:16
It is like that here too but, of course, they are equipped to handle it here. But it's freezing and we are staying in anyway. I hope yours melts quickly so you can get on with your lives. Great photo of the icicles . ~V~

In the Netherlands a lot of rain and a little bit of snow, But where you are it looks very cold and indeed climate change is clearly visible all over the world.
François Fauchard10-Jan-2025 13:52
Take care of yourself.

Extreme situations in the USA: while L.A. is dramatically ravaged by flames you live extreme winter conditions. Good luck to you, stuck in your home...

A fine shot, and so far this season we here in the Twin Cities have had very little snow as we did last year. The climate is always changing.
Liz Bickel09-Jan-2025 23:10
Stay safe, Helen. This looks really nasty. Is it your backyard? Those icicles can be dangerous. It's been below zero (actual tempt) here. But even with this cold & after an ice storm (followed by the blizzard), we don't have ice hanging off our house like this. Someone needs to knock those down before they fall naturally and hurt someone. Again, stay safe!!!

sounds like a daunting situation...still best to be stranded at your home...your photo summarizes the conditions emphatically..
Isabel Cutler09-Jan-2025 21:35
You are wise to cancel appointments! I can relate to the being stuck in situation. When we have freezing rain or snow we know we will be indoors for at least a couple of days because the Department of Transporation has us way down on the to-be-plowed list. One of our kind neighbors who loves "toys" bought an ATV with a plow attachment so he could plow the community! What a guy.
Raymond09-Jan-2025 21:29
And here, it's like that for 5-6 months of the year!
Don09-Jan-2025 21:23
What a contrast to the situation on the opposite side of your country.
Mairéad09-Jan-2025 21:23
They're impressive icicles.
But it doesn't sound much fun being stranded because the snow storm.
We're having a cold snap in Ireland too and some areas, mostly in the south west and midlands, have also been snowed in.
