Iwo Jima harbor

I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t have many pictures of Iwo Jima, where we visited together while living in Okinawa, then realized that Tim had gone there with the Sumo Kyokai (association) and the Japanese military to commemorate the battle and to purify the spirits, when we were living in Tokyo. In attendance at the event were a number of sumo rikishi (wrestlers). Mount Suribachi, where the famous picture of US Marines raising the US flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima was taken, can be seen in the distance across the water.

For pictures from our 2003 trip to Iwo Jima with the US military go to http://pbase.com/helenpb/a_day_on_iwo_jima

The old rusted structures seem to symbolize the useless madness of men while the nature is preserved with the green seashore and the hill.
