All too common a sight in DC

This was taken near the Lincoln Memorial, but a few weeks ago a woman – a client of our dog walker, Andrew -- walking her dog at a park on Capitol Hill was killed by a falling branch. Luckily her dog survived unscathed. The arborist who took down the 100-year-old oak tree, which had been declared to be in good health by the city in 2022, mentioned that healthy trees, usually older, mature trees and in particular oaks, can drop limbs in stretches of extreme heat due to something called “Sudden Branch Drop Syndrome.” They don’t know if that was the cause of the tragic incident at Garfield Park, but given the brutal temperatures we were having every day for weeks, it is certainly a possibility.

That's really quite frightening.
A very powerful image.

That's a frightening story!

That's terrible, Helen. But we don't have climate change. We have been over 90 for the entire month of July.

falling branches are hazard enough, and a collapsing trunk like this one all the more alarming...if global warming persists there could be even more such events, bad news for everyone..
bill friedlander23-Jul-2024 15:26
The full extent of global warming is still being played out. V

Wow! Thats seems so unlikely, I've never heard of that before.
Carl Carbone23-Jul-2024 12:31
I've never heard of that. How tragic.
Julie Oldfield23-Jul-2024 12:23
That is so sad. I have never heard of tree limbs falling like that outside of storms.
hayl23-Jul-2024 12:18
Beautiful huge tree so such a shame it's down. The death is so random that it adds to the tragedy.
Pierre Martin23-Jul-2024 12:17
quite tragic that story, quite huge that tree!
pkocinski23-Jul-2024 11:53
Sad that someone was killed. That tree does look rotted in the center.
Isabel Cutler23-Jul-2024 10:51
How very sad. This is a very common occurrence in our area, often resulting in power outages.

Wow, didn't know about falling branches like that! Must have been quite an impressive tree.

We have also had a lot of storms in the Neterlands lately, with also falling branches.
Sorry to hear that someone died.

Sorry and saddened to hear about the woman who was killed by the falling tree branch. Unfortunately this type of accidents seem to happen now and then, everywhere. The park authorities try their best to protect these big mature trees as much as possible (by getting arborists to inspect and certify them on a regular basis, for example), but despite their best efforts, a branch or even the whole tree would suddenly fall down one day and kill somone ...

Your photo reminded me of all the broken and downed trees here this Spring and Summer. Then, I read your tragic story. I've never heard of "Sudden Branch Drop Syndrome" before, but this seems to be another scary side effect of Climate Change. The woman's family must be devastated.
