Merlion, Singapore

The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore. It is depicted as a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Being of prominent symbolic nature to Singapore and Singaporeans in general, it is widely used to represent both the city state and its people in sports teams, advertising, branding, tourism and as a national personification.

The Merlion was first used in Singapore as the logo for the tourism board. Its name combines "mer," meaning the sea, and "lion." The fish body represents Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name—Singapura—meaning "lion city" or "kota singa." (Wikipedia)

It’s striking how it almost appears to be glowing compared to the rest of the picture. V

A visit to Singapore is on my bucket list, but I doubt that I would be thrilled with the climate. There is so much exciting to see AND eat!

Interesting sculpture and historical background. Was this as you first come into the harbor? Without the crane in the background, this icon would stand out as a very dramatic entrance point. Fascinating.

Fabulous image- I love the juxtaposition of the Merlion with the industrial stuff. Great information too. I had seen these before but never knew that story or the one of the origins of the name Singapore. ~BV~

Wow, Helen, this picture really brings back nostalgic memories for me. I think it shows the Merlion at its original location at the mouth of the Singapore river. In 2002, the Merlion has been moved to its current location at One Fullerton facing the Marina Bay. I have almost forgotten how the Merlion looks like at its original location, your photo just bring back memories of it to me! VVV
