Interesting statue at the monastery

Since several people commented on this statue, partially seen in the below/previous picture, I thought I’d give a full view of it. I’m not really sure what it is. NOTE: Based on several comments, it seems to be a lion!

The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a mid-20th century Buddhist temple located in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. Its designation as a monastery is actually a misnomer because there are no monks residing at the complex, which is managed solely by laypersons. My notes say it was a very long hike to get up to the top of the hill where the complex was located.

I finally found my print pictures of all the foreign travel we did while posted with the State Department to Yokohama/Tokyo (1991-95) and our first tour in Turkey (1996-2000), including to Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Israel, Jordan and Germany. Since we can't really do any vacation travel these days, it's a nice trip down memory lane to revisit all those places we saw so long ago.

Great to see you there with that green creature. Based on what I saw of the ears and tail in the previous image, I thought elephant. With those big floppy dog ears I don't know what animal this represents.

PS The statue definitely looks like a Buddha riding a lion. Buddhism and lions historically go together. Sometimes, Buddha is depicted as a lion himself. Other times, he is riding on the back of a lion or else on a throne with lions holding his throne. I'm not sure of the exact tale that this specific statue tells, but I'm sure the sculptor did when he created it.

Nice to see you playing tourist. Indeed, it is an interesting and very big statue.
globalgadabout12-Jun-2024 16:27
it looks a bit like a lion, so perhaps a tale of the Buddha is represented here...is that you in front, giving a sense of the sculpture's size...
