Some things change, but others never will

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Tim is in Riyadh this week and is under orders to take pictures of the Diplomatic Quarter, where we lived for three years, until 2016. I doubt he’ll have much time for that, but he did catch this modern shopping center (Oud Square), one of several new ones around the DQ, which never used to have anything even remotely resembling that. He says there are now hotels, restaurants and even a liquor store under construction for diplomatic personnel. In the picture, however, are three women (walking side by side) dressed in black abayas and hijab, something I was sure hadn’t changed significantly, and so it hasn’t, even on the more “liberal” DQ.

My how time flies. I didn't realize it has been that long since you left Riyadh. The mall looks very nice. Amazing that they are allowing a liquor store to be built! V

Fascinating to see this shot and your commentary after your time there. The liquor store sounds radical. V

It is amazing how things are becoming more liberal but some things never change. It is an interesting contrast. V

But for the woman in black (I can only see one), this could be a quiet moment in any modern tropical or subtropical city.

Agree. Strong contrast!
