Sahraa Betts, 2009-2022

Sahraa crossed the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon after struggling with cognitive dysfunction, evidence of cancer in her blood, growing weakness in her legs and refusing to eat anything at all for a week. The internal medicine specialist felt this would be best given the “perfect storm,” as he called it, of health problems that have only gotten worse in the past few weeks. We felt the same way and believed that even more invasive tests to pinpoint exactly where the cancer was and possible chemotherapy would do nothing for her quality of life, which had already deteriorated radically, and would only give her a few extra months to live – more for us than for her.

She has been a wonderful companion for the past 12 years and a good sport to travel all over the world with us without complaint. Not just because she was our Sahraa, but she was hands down the sweetest dog I’ve ever met.

This is an old picture from 2010 soon after we adopted her, when she had arrived in DC from Kuwait, one of 16 survivors of a shelter fire. We were lucky to find her, and hopefully she felt the same about us. We will miss her terribly.

Thank you to everybody for your sympathy and kind wishes for her recovery. I was going to post another picture instead and wait until tomorrow to post this one, but I decided that would be disrespectful of her memory, so here it is.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly unsharp.

Helen and Tim, I found out only moments ago that Sahraa passed away in 2022. So sorry for your loss. ... I found out about it after I decided to look for photos of Sahraa upon seeing the photos of Queenie a few minutes ago. ... I've not spent much time in PBase during the past couple of years. So I've been out of touch and way behind on news about and from fellow PBase members. ... Wishing both of you and Queenie all the best. Cheers, A.G.

Goodbye, beautiful Sahraa. Sincerest condolences to her family. It is always heartbreaking to let loved pets go but also the kindest decision made for them at the end. I have just reviewed her story and recalled waht a wonderful and adventurous life she has had with you.

My heart breaks for you. At the same time, Sahraa waits at the Rainbow Bridge. While she waits, she is happy and healthy and "smiling" again; just like in your photo above. May your memories of all the good times comfort until you meet again.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your sweet and beautiful Sahraa. Pets bring so much joy to our lives, and their passing leaves a huge void. You and Sahraa were so lucky to have found each other and to have had 12 wonderful years together! Unfortunately, it's never enough time...

Sahraa will always hold a special place in your heart. May your memories give you comfort.

Oh NO! Oh I am so, so saddened by this news. I can't believe Sahraa is no longer here, but believe me she will live on through all the amazing photos you took of her over the years. She was such a special dog, so well loved, and there is little doubt that those of us who knew her only through your photos, loved her too. I am so sorry, Helen.
