This statue commemorating John Philip Sousa was the last item on the Capitol Hill Restoration Society’s whimsical scavenger hunt, which I forgot to post. It’s located at the Marine Barracks on 8th Street SE, which is also the Hill’s popular restaurant row. There was no way to get close to it on Marine Corps property, so I had to settle for a shot through the bars of a fence with several trucks nearby.
John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. Among his best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (National March of the United States of America) and "Semper Fidelis" (official march of the United States Marine Corps).
