Last but not least

This statue commemorating John Philip Sousa was the last item on the Capitol Hill Restoration Society’s whimsical scavenger hunt, which I forgot to post. It’s located at the Marine Barracks on 8th Street SE, which is also the Hill’s popular restaurant row. There was no way to get close to it on Marine Corps property, so I had to settle for a shot through the bars of a fence with several trucks nearby.

John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. Among his best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (National March of the United States of America) and "Semper Fidelis" (official march of the United States Marine Corps). Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly
unsharp.

Excellent statue. The flag is conspicuously absent.

A perfect framing to show the statue with this unexpected (to me) pointed helmet...

Nice that a composer should have a statue made of him.

Ah yes the American March King, there's an interesting connection between him
and the Foshay Tower in Minneapolis.

also worth a mention, his Liberty Bell March is well known to Monty Python fans... the sunny sky shuits the upbeat nature of military marches..

What a neat tribute to this composer. Maybe worth another trip to reshoot with the Stars and Stripe flying next to him.

Terrific composition, Helen. It's good to know that John Philip is still marching along. V
