50 American flags, 700,000 American COVID deaths

The flags surrounding the Washington Monument represent the 50 American states. The 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 represent all 50 states as well. (NOTE: Different sites have different totals for deaths, ranging from 680,000 to 688,000 to 706,000.)

*****

This art exhibition blankets the National Mall with more than 670,000 white flags, showing the magnitude of our loss as a nation while honoring each person who has died from COVID-19.

Everybody has seen the constantly rising number of people who have died of COVID in the US – 688,000 as of September 26 -- and I think to a certain extent people have become numb to it. But seeing it represented so graphically reminds that the victims weren’t numbers but real people with families and lives and hopes and dreams and that they’re all gone now, in so many instances unnecessarily.

The flags stretched almost as far as the eye can see in several directions, and the sheer enormity of it was overwhelming.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly
unsharp.

As far as the eye can see, posted earlier:

For some reason, I missed seeing this gallery before. How poignant. This should have never happened in America!!! The handwritten messages in your gallery are touching. These flags were real people, not just statistics.

Now, two years later, most all of this has been mostly forgotten by nearly everyone:
except for those who continue to miss their loved ones (many who died needlessly)
and for those still suffering from Long COVID.

When this all started, who would have imaged that over 1 Million Americans would die during the pandemic?

Another mind blowing shot - to think each of those flags has a family or loved ones left behind ! V

If the same percentage of the population died from covid as from the 1918-19 flu epidemic
there would be over 2,000,000 flags there.

A beautiful presentation of this very sad statistical display of deaths due to covid in the US.

This should have never happened in this country. It’s terrible how political everything is. Such a sobering scene. It’s almost surreal with bright flags in the background. V

That really sends out a message of just what a tragedy the pandemic has been for the United States and many other countries.. And sadly it's not over. V

So sad and so impressive, each white flag representing a life lost ... everything has been lost, and yet, no one has died from the available and free vaccine or from wearing a mask. You just can't fix stupid I guess!

clearly the huge cost of Covid has affected many people, as noted by all the visitors..
