700 block of 4th Street SW in 2021

I had recently posted a picture of a mural with a “postcard” included in it of the 700 block of 4th Street SW in 1949 (see below picture). Out of curiosity we went back to see what that block looks like now. Almost everything in Southwest was demolished in the ’70s and ’80s to make way for a freeway and large apartment buildings, forcing out the mainly Black residents who had lived there for generations.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

I am quite surprised to see such buildings in Washington...great photo, though! V

That happened way too much. I-490 was built right through a Rochester neighborhood and basically destroyed it. Urban renewal has been a disaster. This documents the results well. V

Oh dear, this is such a sad replacement for the wonderful old buildings that were once there. As so often happens (and you have to wonder why) characterless buildings replace what was once interesting and characterful. V

Very typical boxlike complex. No imagination. Sad.
