‘From Mother Earth Flows the River of Life,’ Daphne Odjig (Odawa, Pottawatomi), 1973

Daphne Odjig was once called “Picasso’s Grandmother” by fellow Canadian painter Norval Morrisseau. This work was inspired by an Anishinaabe female glyph found in Ontario, Canada, but Odjig transformed the simple linear creation into a swirling work of energy, possibly depicting the birth of our planet, the seas and the land, with humans roaming throughout.

*****

From the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery website:

“Women have long been the creative force behind Native American art, yet their individual contributions have been largely unrecognized, instead treated as anonymous representations of entire cultures. ‘Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists’ explores the artistic achievements of Native women and establishes their rightful place in the art world.”

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

Wow this is a great painting, I compare it a bit with our way of life in this time the great chaos, nobody knows how to find nobody no structure but still an enormous dynamic, great work Helen BV
