According to Tim, this mosque is where the Uzbeks had a gigantic copy of the Quran, big enough to be read from the minaret, but it was taken by the Persians and divided into sections that are now located in several Iranian cities. He said the Uzbeks are attempting to get them back, but doubts the effort will be successful.
Construction of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque was started by Tamerlane in 1399, and in the 15th century it was one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. By the mid-20th century only a grandiose ruin of it still survived, but now major parts of the mosque have been restored.
