Too close for comfort: Eastern Cicada Killer (wasp)

Closer than I care to be to any kind of insect, let alone a bee (or wasp or hornet). Thanks to Isabel, I contacted BugGuide and they identified it http://bugguide.net/node/view/514

We stopped at Virginia’s Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary, which we’ve passed many times on the parkway, to see what was there. It’s not an easy place to navigate and isn’t really set up for viewing anything, but we found a few openings on to the water and saw some great egrets and a few other birds along with dragonflies and other insects. It’s also on the final approach to Reagan National Airport.

Hummmm...now that I looked more closely at it's body I don't think this is a paper wasp, which I've photographed innumerable times. If you're curious you can resize the image to be no more than 560 pixels on its longest side and send it to bugguide.net for an ID, which usually comes within minutes.

Oh yes....this is an EXCELLENT capture - I love its downturned "mouth". Quite an expression. You do know that these wasps have unique faces - each one different.

You'll get used to being up close. They'll leave you alone. Just don't move fast and intimidate them. If one starts to buzz around you just freeze.
