There is only one village on Taketomi Island, with traditional Okinawan architecture, beautiful beaches, stone walls, sand streets and transportation by water buffalo-drawn carts. It had a population of 323 as of January 2012. Almost every house has a shisa, or guardian lion-dog, on the roof or two opposing ones on the gateposts. There are several more pictures of traditional homes in this gallery, which I had posted years ago.
This is a close-up of the roof in the previous picture.
