Water buffalo, Iriomote Island

Iriomote Island is the most remote of the Yaeyama group, with 90 percent of the island covered by virgin subtropical forest, mangroves along the Urauchi River and several major waterfalls. It is home to the critically endangered Iriomote wildcat as well as about 2,000 people and has been called the “Galapagos of the Pacific” (or the Orient, the East, or Japan). This is one of the many water buffalo one encounters on the island.

What a cool shot of this water buffalo! I can't imagine that it feels comfortable having a rope piercing in the nose! V

yes, a great shot, but I have some sympathy for the buffalo's nose

My favourite, the water buffalo...

Fantastic capture! I agree with Dave that it seems unnecessarily cruel to secure this beautiful animal with a rope through the nose. V

Poor thing, it actually breaks my heart to see it suffer ... great catch though

I agree with globalgadabout! The older I get the more I learn about man's cruelty, and it makes me sadder and sadder.
