Quite by chance we found dragon boat races under way down river from the main festival venue. We used to attend these “haarii” in Okinawa, so it was nice to see them again, although the finish is a bit different in the States.
This was the scene immediately after the end of the race. In the background is the Hawthorne Bridge, which had to be raised to allow a sailboat with a very tall mast pass under it, temporarily halting the races and creating a big backup of traffic waiting to cross to the other side of the city.
