Desert resident

I cannot believe that I actually took a picture of a beetle – this has to be a first, ever. My Pbase friends must have been having more of an effect on me than I realized ;-).

I saw several of these fairly large beetles walking around the sand, both at Mada’in Saleh and during our desert caravan adventure, where this one was spotted.

The image is pretty heavily cropped; I may have been brave enough to get closer than I normally would, but I didn’t necessarily want to see the whites of his eyes, either, so to speak.

FWIW my Internet connection has deteriorated significantly in the past few weeks, although the provider says it’s just fine. I don’t call going down for long periods of time several times in an evening “fine,” but it does affect not only work but also my ability to comment.

Well, you did well for it being your first!!! I wonder if these are the ones that tilt head down to catch dew in the morning.

Looks like a type of scarab beetle. Nice find.

If it was me I'd be using my longest telephoto lens - I'm not a bug or snake person :-)

Fantastic shot, Helen!! I am so glad you took this photo. I have been wondering what insects one might encounter in these environs. It could be some sort of Carabidae beetle perhaps. V

I find it very interesting that this beetle sits so tall on its legs. Probably designed that way so it doesn't burn its underside on the hot sand. I'm proud of you being so brave, however, I LOVE shooting bugs. They are the most wonderfully and fearfully designed! The more I study them in my macros the more I realize that some of the science fiction creatures I've seen in movies look very much like bugs I've photographed.
